The UMDF Mitochondrial Medicine Pathway for Advanced Clinical Training grant (M-PACT) program is a one-year award designed to support the training of US-based clinicians at the residency or fellowship stage of career who plan to practice the clinical management of patients with mitochondrial disorders.
PURPOSE OF THE MITOCHONDRIAL MEDICINE PATHWAY FOR ADVANCED CLINICAL TRAINING (M-PACT) GRANT
The primary goal of the UMDF M-PACT program is to expand the number of clinicians practicing the clinical management of patients with primary mitochondrial disorders in the United States.
Residents or Fellows will work within their current institution and, concurrently with neurology, genetics, or other formal training programs, receive mentor-guided training in mitochondrial medicine in a clinical setting. Training should include attendance at mitochondrial medicine-focused lectures, seminars, rounds, and conferences.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Residents or fellows in any subspecialty are welcome to apply. In addition, to be eligible to apply for the UMDF M-PACT award, an applicant must be a resident or fellow who:
- holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree (e.g., DO, MBBS)
- is training level PGY3 and above
- is already enrolled in an accredited training program looking to supplement their training
- is training at an institution that can assume both administrative and financial responsibility for the grant.
Residents or Fellows are expected to:
- Actively participate in seeing a minimum of 2 patients with mitochondrial disease in clinic at least one afternoon per week (minimum 10% effort)
- Actively participate in mitochondrial disease-focused clinical trial(s) (preferred, but optional)
- Submit by December 31, 2026 a mid-year report on their experiences thus far in didactic and clinical training
- Attend the UMDF 2027 Mitochondrial Medicine Conference (June 16-19, 2027, Philadelphia, PA). Residents or Fellows will receive complementary conference registration and 4 nights of paid hotel as part of the award
- Submit an abstract for consideration and present a poster and/or oral abstract at the conference based on learnings during the award period. Any academic topic may be submitted, including care pathway quality improvement, case reports, clinical trial findings, literature reviews, etc.
